श्रीरुद्राष्टकम्

स्तोत्र का अर्थ:

• मैं ब्रह्मांड के राजा को नमन करता हूं, जिसका स्वरूप मुक्ति, सर्वशक्तिमान और सर्वव्यापी ब्रह्म है, जो वेदों के रूप में प्रकट होता है. मैं भगवान शंकर की पूजा करता हूं, अपनी महिमा में चमकते हुए, बिना भौतिक गुणों के, अविभाज्य, इच्छा रहित, चेतना के सभी व्यापक आकाश और स्वयं गगन को उनके वस्त्र के रूप में धारण करते हैं ॥1॥
• मैं सर्वोच्च भगवान को दंडवत करता हूं, जो “ओम्” के निराकार स्रोत हैं, सभी का स्व, सभी स्थितियों और अवस्थाओं को पार करते हुए, वाणी, समझ और इंद्रियबोध से परे, विस्मयकारी, लेकिन कृपालु, कैलाश के शासक, मृत्यु के भक्षक, सभी गुणों के अमर धाम हैं ॥2॥
• मैं भगवान शिव की पूजन करता हूं, जिनका रूप अडिग हिमालय की बर्फ के समान सफेद है, अनगिनत कामदेवों की सुंदरता से दीप्तिमान हैं, जिनका सिर पवित्र गंगा नदी से चमकता है. अर्धचंद्राकार अपनी भौंह को सुशोभित करता है और साँप उनकी नीलकंठ गर्दन को ढँकते हैं ॥3॥
• सभी के प्यारे भगवान, कानों से लटकते झिलमिलाते झुमके, सुंदर भौहें और बड़ी आंखें, हर्षित चेहरे के साथ दया से भरा और उनके गले पर एक नीला धब्बा है ॥4॥
• मैं भवानी के पति शंकर की पूजा करता हूं, उग्र, श्रेष्ठ, प्रकाशमान सर्वोच्च भगवान. अविभाज्य, अजन्मा और एक लाख सूर्यों की महिमा के साथ उज्ज्वल; जो त्रिशूल धारण करके त्रिविध दुखों की जड़ को फाड़ देते हैं, और जो प्रेम से ही प्राप्त होता है ॥5॥
• आप जो अंशहीन हैं, सदा धन्य हैं, सृष्टि के प्रत्येक चक्र के अंत में सार्वभौमिक विनाश का कारक, शुद्ध हृदय के लिए शाश्वत आनंद का स्रोत हैं, दानव का वध करने वाले हैं, त्रिपुरा, चेतना और आनंद का अवतार, वासना के शत्रु हैं, मोह को दूर करनेवाला मुझ पर दया करो ॥6॥
• हे उमा के महादेव, जब तक आपकी पूजन नहीं की जाती है, तब तक इस दुनिया में या अगले में सुख, शांति या दुख से मुक्ति नहीं है. आप जो सब प्राणियों के हृदयों में निवास करते हैं, और जिसमें सब प्राणियों का अस्तित्व है, मुझ पर दया करो, प्राणनाथ ॥7॥
• योग, प्रार्थना या कर्मकांड तो मैं नहीं जानता, लेकिन हर जगह और हर पल मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ, शंभू! मेरे भगवान, मेरी रक्षा करो, दुखी और पीड़ित, जैसे मैं जन्म, वृद्धावस्था और मृत्यु के कष्टों के साथ हूं ॥8॥
• भगवान रुद्र की स्तुति का यह अष्टक उन शंकर जी की तुष्टि (प्रसन्नता) के लिए ब्राह्मण द्वारा कहा गया। जो मनुष्य इसे भक्तिपूर्वक पढ़ते हैं, उन पर भगवान शम्भु प्रसन्न होते हैं ॥9॥

Meaning of Stotra:

I bow to the King of the Universe, whose nature is liberation, the almighty and omnipresent Brahman, manifested as the Vedas. I worship Lord Shankar, shining in His glory, without material qualities, indivisible, desireless, all pervasive of consciousness and wearing the heavens themselves as His garment.॥1॥
I bow to the Supreme Lord, who is the formless source of “OM”, the Self of all, transcending all conditions and states, beyond speech, understanding and sense perception, awe-inspiring but benevolent, the ruler of Kailash, the destroyer of death, the immortal abode of all virtues.॥2॥
I worship Lord Shiva, whose form is as white as the snow of the immovable Himalayas, radiant with the beauty of countless Kamadevas, whose head shines from the holy river Ganges. The crescent moon adorns His brow and snakes encircle His blue-coloured neck.॥3॥
The beloved Lord of all, dangling from His ears are glittering earrings, beautiful eyebrows and large eyes, full of compassion with a joyful face and a blue spot on His neck.॥4॥
I worship Shankara, the husband of Bhawani, the fierce, exalted, luminous Supreme Lord, indivisible, unborn and radiant with the glory of a hundred thousand suns; who holding the trishula tears apart the root of the threefold miseries, and who is attained only by love.॥5॥
You who are partless, eternally blessed, the cause of universal destruction at the end of each cycle of creation, the source of eternal bliss to the pure heart, the slayer of demons, Tripura, the embodiment of consciousness and bliss, the enemy of lust, the dispeller of attachment, have mercy on me.॥6॥ O Mahadeva of Uma, unless you are worshipped, there is no happiness, peace or freedom from misery in this world or the next. O you who reside in the hearts of all beings, and in whom all beings have their existence, have mercy on me, O Prananath. ॥7॥

I do not know yoga, prayers or rituals, but everywhere and every moment I bow down to you, O Shambhu! My Lord, protect me, miserable and afflicted as I am with the sufferings of birth, old age and death. ॥8॥

This octave of praise of Lord Rudra was uttered by the Brahmin for the satisfaction of that Shankara. Lord Shambhu is pleased with those men who recite it with devotion. ॥9॥
