Importance and philosophical dignity of Bindu Madhav temple.
Significance:
Bindu Madhav temple is the main Vishnu Peeth of Kashi located in the Panchganga Ghat area of Varanasi. This temple has been revered by Vishnu devotees since ancient times. The ancient Bindu Madhav temple was attacked several times. The present temple was rebuilt in 1755 AD by the representative of Aundh state (Maharashtra). It is believed that this place was famous by different names in all the four eras - Adimadhav in Krita Yuga, Shrid Madhav in Treta Yuga, Anand Madhav in Dwapar Yuga and Bindumadhav in Kali Yuga.
Mythological importance:
This place is considered to be the main center of Vishnu Kashi, which has a special confluence of purity and spiritual energy. It is believed that Agnibindu Rishi performed rigorous penance here. He used to remain absorbed in penance by drinking only the drop of water dripping from the front part of Kush. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed him and this place came to be known as "Bindu Madhav" in his name.
History and Invasion:
The Bindu Madhav temple was invaded many times, especially during the reign of Aurangzeb. In 1669 AD, the huge temple located here was demolished and a mosque was built. The grandeur of this temple is mentioned in the travelogue of French traveler Tavernier. There are different opinions about its original idol - the idols located in Lalghat, Brahmaghat, Kaal Bhairav area and Bhaat ki Gali are considered to be the original.
Philosophical and religious dignity:
The Bindu Madhav area has the pride of Vishnukanchi among the Saptapuri. The glory of this place is mentioned in Skanda Purana, Padma Purana and Sanatkumar Samhita. Especially in the month of Kartik, its importance increases a lot, like Prayagraj in Magh month and Narmada coast in Vaishakh. Importance of Vaikunth Chaturdashi:
According to mythological belief, Lord Vishnu came to this area on the day of Vaikunth Chaturdashi. He worshipped Lord Shiva with Sahasrakamals, pleased with which Shiva named this date as "Vaikunth Chaturdashi". Bathing and worshipping at Panchganga Ghat on this day gives special merit.
Rituals and Festivals:
Religious rituals, Katha-Kirtan, Deepdan and special Shringar Utsav are organized here for a month in the month of Kartik. During this time, Akashdeep is also donated for the salvation of ancestors. A large number of devotees from South India come here on this auspicious occasion. Bindu Madhav Temple is not only an integral part of the religious landscape of Varanasi, but it is also an important center of Vishnu devotion and cultural traditions.
